CN 550 - Prentiss Turn - 2016.04.19

A 30 mile chase of the CN 550 - Prentiss turn train from Mirror to Prentiss, Alberta, Canada with footage from 14 different locations along the way. We begin the journey at Mirror, Alberta, Canada where this daily local originates. A pair for EMD SD40-2W's are assigned to todays train and the crew begins the day switching for a few hours in the CN Mirror yard. After tacking some northbound loads onto CN 114. The power is run back light and tied on to the 31 car train. After the crews lunch break, they depart Mirror for the short jaunt south on the CN Three Hills subdivision. Now southbound on the Three Hills subdivision, 550 skirts along the edges of Haunted Lake, just north of the village of Alix, AB. At Alix, 550 slows to a stop and leaves a portion of the train on the mainline while the power plus 5 empties reverse into the enormous Rahr Malt plant. The empty malt cars are set off and 6 loads are lifted from another track which will tag along for the trip to Prentiss and back to Mirror to be forwarded along the CN system. With the train put back together from the set off and lift at Alix, 550 is southbound again on the Three Hills sub. Whistling for a grade crossing of the connector road between range road 231A and highway 601. The Malt plant is visible in the distance. At mile 7.9 on the Three Hills subdivision is Alix Junction. Here 550 branches off onto the Brazeau sub (pronounced Bra-zoo by CN employees) for the journey west. In the rolling hills of Lacombe County, oil and gas wells dot farm land in this sparsely populated part of the province. The diesel engines of the two vintage EMD units break the silence as 550 continues southwest along the Brazeau sub whistling for a grade crossing at township road 392. Continuing west, 550 rolls over one of many wooden bridges along this line at range road 243. With only 3.5 meters (11.5') of clearance, truck drivers and large equipment must find a different route south. Nearing Joffre, AB, and with the behemoth NOVA Chemicals/INEOS petrochemical plant sites in the background, 550 crosses township road 290. The sprawling NOVA Chemicals plant is served exclusively by CN and is a major source of freight traffic for the Brazeau subdivision. Countless loads of plastic pellets and tank cars are shipped every day from the site on the two daily turn trains. CN 555 from Red Deer, and the 550 from Mirror. Having arrived at the tiny hamlet of Joffre, AB. Once again 550 stops on the main and sets off a few cars in the siding. The movements at Joffre and Prentiss are dependent on what time the 550/555 trains arrives. The two trains protect against each other and will sometimes leap frog one or the other depending on a couple of factors such as which train arrives first and the number of cars on each train. Another interesting note is the air raid style warning system in the hamlet of Joffre. Located so close to the NOVA facility, an emergency warning system was installed to alert the residents of a potential emergency at the plant. After the set off at Joffre, 550 is westbound again and crosses highway 597 at grade. Just east of station name sign Prentiss lies another large petrochemical facility. The DOW/MEGlobal/Praxair Prentiss site is served by both CN & CP with an elaborate network of track that allows trains to be wyed inside the plant limits. Today, 550 reverses into the Prentiss site on the west leg of the wye. After some switching, 550 exits on the east leg of the wye with the DOW loads in tow and the lead unit now pointing east on the mainline. The train is turned but before heading back the way they came, today's switch list dictates a reverse movement west a little less than a mile to the 550's name sake - station name sign Prentiss. This is the furthest point west along the Brazeau sub train 550 will see before returning east. After a short session of switching and everyone aboard, 550 departs eastbound. As the tail end disappears around a curve at MP 22, this marks the end of our journey from Mirror, AB to Prentiss, AB. 550 will continue eastbound and switch the NOVA Chemcials plant at Joffre. After that it's a straight shot back to Mirror with car loads of another days worth of production from the industries along the CN Brazeau subdivision.
