Weaving on the world's loom. May they guide it. May it change. Many miles upward, it hardly shows. The earth is a cloudy green and blurry blue. The vast vault of the stratosphere reaching, changeless spatial infinity beyond the pulsating engine. There was silence and serenity. No one can touch it. Looking down. Gleaming like a slow curve. Contours shown on the map. The hills, the sea, the sun, the wind and the rain. They didn't change. A million slow years. The human effort flickered briefly in unending night. Farther down where cities had been. A man alone bitterly on the controls. Gaunt sprawling form awkward pressure cabin. Dark flying suit. Shoulders drawn into lines. Sunken eyes weariness dark and dreadful intensity. He's seen too much. Survive until he began to look like most other people in the world. Heir of the ages. Dull thoughts, mechanically i went through the motion following my course. Natural landmarks are still there. Binoculars. i never use them. Broad shallow craters, a vitreous smoothness throwing back sunlight in flat blank glitter. The ground is churning blasted desolation, regions of deadness, twisted dead trees blowing sand, tumbling skeletons in glowing fluorescence, nightmare bombs riding on the wings of fire, horror shaking the planet, blowing up the cities, radioactive dust passing over the villages and small towns. some of them are deserted blowing plagues, economic breakdown. Others still seemed to be living half alive. Struggle to return an agricultural system. Insects shrugged scarred and maimed. Gray thoughts foresaw the collapse. recorded 2002 February.
