Farm Life to the BBC | John Murray | #8

🎙️ John Murray is a renowned sports broadcaster at the BBC and Football Correspondent for BBC 5 Live Sport. Raised on a farm in Northumberland with his four brothers, John developed a strong work ethic and a passion for football and sports commentary. Encouraged by his mother to pursue academic excellence and explore opportunities beyond farming, he found his interest in radio journalism blossoming during this years at the University of Wales, Lampeter (formerly St David’s College). A pivotal moment came during the end of his university life in Wales when a career advisor suggested he consider radio commentary. From that point on, John knew exactly what he wanted to do. His career began with hands-on experience in hospital radio and writing for local newspapers in Northumberland. After completing a postgraduate course in radio journalism in Darlington, he quickly found his footing in the industry. John’s early career started at TFM Radio on Teeside, before he joined BBC Tees in 1994 as a producer. Thanks to the support of colleagues who recognised his potential, John transitioned to a broadcaster role. One year later, John transferred to the BBC Radio Sport department in London and then became part of the football commentary team. Over the years, he has built a reputation for his reliable and engaging commentary, covering major football events, including the Premier League and biggest international tournaments. Most recently, he commentated on Euro 2024 in Germany for the BBC 5 Live alongside notable figures like Alan Shearer, Joe Hart and Matt Upson. His commitment and love to the profession and his ability to connect with listeners have cemented his place as a prominent voice in football commentary. In episode eight of JournoCast, John shares insights into his childhood and how he discovered his passion for commentary. He discusses his early influences, what appeals to him in commentary and how he has adapted to journalism’s transition into the digital age. John speaks candidly about his struggles with conducting interviews, how he engages his audience during games and reveals his favourite players and stadiums! ➡️JournoCast brings you stories from those who live and breathe the media landscape on a daily basis, shining a light on their hard work and providing insight into their roles and motivations⬅️ 🎶 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6kaw... ✖️Check out John on X: https://x.com/bbcjohnmurray ✅ Feel free to get in touch via the comments or below: X: https://x.com/MrLewisThompson Instagram:   / journocast   Email: [email protected] Timestamps: 00:00 - Introduction 01:23 - What made John’s dream possible? 04:45 - Childhood & finding a passion 07:26 - Biggest influences 08:15 - University & early career 11:28 - Was commentary a realistic goal? 14:35 - Is John naturally confident? 17:07 - Why did commentary appeal to John? 18:23 - Adapting to the digital age of journalism 20:53 - Importance of being multi-skilled 24:19 - What does John love about being a commentator? 25:57 - How does a commentator stay motivated? 26:59 - FA Cup (Coventry vs Man Utd) 28:32 - How does John engage his audience? 31:27 - Interviews 34:54 - Lionel Messi, Allianz Arena & Hamden Park 35:44 - John’s final advice #journocast #football #bbcsport #radio #bbc5livesport
