Jominy End-Quench Test

This is a standard hardness lab test to determine the heat treating properties of steels. Material Properties come from 1) the atomic bonding and chemistry, and 2) the manufacturing methods used. Jominy end quench / hardness tests are shown. If your "surface" hardness (which can be linked to a strength) is not in the area you need, the chemistry of the steel needs to be changed as all the heat treatments (or heat transfer rates) possible are in this simple test. Hardness tests using one standard holding fixture is shown. This type of fixture can cause end lifting of the test coupon, which produces low and incorrect hardness readings. The heat treatment shown was a 1018 steel and the hardness tests were done on a higher alloy steel to show hardenability. This video is to introduce students to the test methods and terminology.
