THE WOLF HUNTERZ Reactions THE WOLF HUNTERZ Reaction To “Piano Concerto No.3 (3rd mov’t)” by Sergei Prokofiev (PC Sequel Series: Part 5 of 5) • Lahav Shani plays & conducts Prokofie... Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto is one of Lahav Shani's great favourites: ‘Colourful, virtuoso and full of lyricism – it’s one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire, and certainly one of the most demanding’. The latter remark is no exaggeration: it is a huge task for soloist, conductor and orchestra alike. That Lahav Shani conducts this performance from the piano is something you have to see to believe. Nothing less than extraordinary. Hi Travis and Suzi! Can you believe we’ve reached the end of our second piano concerto series already? For this final part we are going to revisit the music of Prokofiev (pro-COUGH-ee-eff), but this time instead of his scary second piano concerto, we’ll check out the finale of his well-known and widely-celebrated third piano concerto. This performance is highly unusual in that the conductor is also the soloist. While it’s common to see the soloist conduct from the piano for Mozart’s piano concertos or sometimes even Beethoven’s, it is unheard of to do this with something as modern and technically demanding as Prokofiev’s concertos. The other thing that is unusual is that this pianist is a real bona fide conductor rather than one of the too frequently encountered pianists who thinks they’re a conductor and waves their arms around foolishly in front of the orchestra. Also, notice how he is sitting in the middle with the orchestra surrounding him. Quite honestly, I think this guy is a genius. If you don’t believe me, then just look at his sideburns:) Thank you guys for indulging me in another series, reading my haikus, and being so much fun! I hope you enjoyed this series as much as the last one. Here’s my final haiku to top it all off.
