Indian business tycoon Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the sprawling Indian conglomerate Tata Group, has died in Mumbai aged 86. According to Reuters, Mr Tata had been undergoing intensive care in hospital. He was born in 1937 into the industrialist Tata family. After studying overseas, he returned to India in 1962 and joined Tata Group, the company founded by his great-grandfather almost a century earlier. Today, the Tata business is a conglomerate of almost 100 companies, including India's largest car maker, its largest steel producer, and a leading telco and IT firm. Mr Tata was appointed chair in 1991, leading the company for more than 20 years until retiring in 2012. During his tenure, he established the telco and IT business and oversaw the takeovers of the British tea giant Tetley, the Dutch steel business Corus, and the luxury British auto brands Jaguar and Land Rover. Reuters reports that Mr Tata never married, and was known for his quiet demeanour, relatively modest lifestyle and philanthropic work.
