Hello Everyone, join me in this video for Railway Reflections at Dumfries Station. There is no doubt that in its day, Dumfries was a railway centre of considerable importance being both an intermediate station on the Carlisle to Glasgow route, as well as a junction for the Dumfries to Stranraer ‘Port Road’ along with various other branch lines. The Beeching cuts of the mid 1960’s dealt the area a major blow with the closure of all the branch lines as well as the route to Stranraer via Castle Douglas along with direct services to Lockerbie. Today, the station still has much to offer the railway enthusiast. It is a fine well-detailed example of a mid 19th Century Station built in the Italianate style on a gentle curve with its glazed platform canopies adding significantly to its design interest. While at the station I highly recommend checking out the display of railway memorabilia that is on display from the Railway Reflections Museum - Dumfries. Later in the video I followed in the footsteps of my 1861 Bradshaw’s Handbook by visiting the beautiful Whitesands area of the town along with its delightful riverside walks. I followed this up with a visit to the Robert Burns mausoleum which stands at the eastern end of the churchyard at St Michael’s Church (which is the oldest church in Dumfries). My journey ended at the small town house where Burns spent the final years of his life and where he died on 21st July 1796. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the video.
