One of the more common misconceptions around P basses with flats is that they're not ideal for slapping. The thing is, there's a ton of examples of this happening in music history (early Louis Johnson springs to mind), and an example of it in Japanese Citypop. "Funky Flushin" by Tatsuro Yamashita is a wonderful example of the percussive nature of this setup. Its bassline, played masterfully by Akihiro Tanaka, acts almost as auxiliary percussion, providing a strong counter-rhythm to the disco-style four-on-the-floor pattern provided by the drums, as well as creating a distinct counter-melodic part that plays with the vocals. The effect is powerful and immediate – when one thinks of "Funky Flushin'" one can't help but think of the bassline first. For this purpose, the P Bass with flats setup shines in ways other basses cannot, and should absolutely be recommended for those trying to create percussive, assertive basslines with an old school sensibility, as Tatsuro Yamashita and Akihiro Tanaka have here.
