*This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they needed* (Disclaimer) Hi guys! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I will be covering Cushing's disease in the dog. Cushing's disease is caused by an over active adrenal gland. The cushing's disease is caused by a pituitary and adrenal disease that causes excessive cortisol production by the adrenal glands. With the excess cortisol in the dog's body, the dog will have a handful of symptoms that will help with the cushings diagnosis. A dog with cushings disease may drink more and pee or urinate more. A dog with cushings may also be overweight, have a potbelly, and and poor fur coat. When the owner comes into the veterinary office most of them will comment on a couple or few of these symptoms. Because of these symptoms, a veterinarian will draw some blood to help diagnose Cushings disease. If the dog has a high ALP, that gives the vet a good idea that the dog may have Cushing's disease. The veterinarian will then complete an ACTH stimulation test or Dex test to confirm the cushings. One of these tests will be needed before any medications can be started. If the pet owner would like to know the location that caused the cushings disease, a consult to an internal medicine veterinarian is always a good idea. That veterinarian may even do an abdominal ultrasound. Medications can then be started to help the dog with cuthing's leave a happy and healthier life.
