His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. His family later moved to Indiana and settled in Spencer County when Abraham was seven years old. Lincoln's childhood was marked by hardship and poverty. Lincoln received limited formal education, attending school for only a few months. However, he was an avid reader and self-taught, educating himself by borrowing books and reading extensively. He developed a strong interest in law and politics. Career: In 1830, Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois, where he worked various jobs, including storekeeper, postmaster, and surveyor. During this time, he also served as a captain in the Illinois militia during the Black Hawk War. It was during his time in New Salem that Lincoln began his political career. In 1834, Lincoln was elected to the Illinois State Legislature as a member of the Whig Party. He served four terms in the legislature and became known for his eloquence and wit.
