Dr. Puneet Sindhwani ’01, ’01: 2024 UToledo Health Distinguished Alumni Healthcare Provider

Dr. Puneet Sindhwani ’01, ’01 is a board-certified urologist, chair of the Department of Urology and director of transplantation services, chief of andrology and male reproductive health at UToledo Health. He earned his medical degree from Government Medical College, Patiala, Punjab, India and completed his residency in urology at the Medical College of Ohio (MCO), now The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. He also earned his MSBS degree in urological sciences and transplantation at MCO. For more than 24 years, Sindhwani has practiced urology at leading academic medical centers throughout the U.S. He led the state of Oklahoma’s first pediatric kidney transplant program and other specialized programs treating patients with male reproductive challenges. While chief of urology at the Overton Brooks VA medical center and professor of urology at LSU, he pioneered minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer and enlarged prostate, which were telecast worldwide by the American Urological Association (AUA). He also performed no-needle, no scalpel vasectomies and was awarded the prestigious AUA/IAUA scholarship for international volunteerism. In 2016, Sindhwani joined his alma mater as chairman of the Department of Urology and has pioneered several therapies for prostate health including being the first doctor in northwest Ohio to perform high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) with prostate cancer patients and Aquablation for patients experiencing enlarged prostate. Under his leadership, the renal transplantation program has grown and gained national recognition. He is currently the president of the Ohio Urologic Society and immediate past president of Indian American Urological Association. He was the first to be awarded the prestigious Kenneth A. Kropp, MD, Endowed Professorship of Urology at UToledo and has been recognized for his international volunteerism and promotion of urology by Urologic Society of India.
