Fall 2024 Virtual Lecture Series - Fraser Januchowski Hartley, Ph D

On Thursday, September 19th at 5:30 PM. Faculty member from NSU's Halmos College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Fraser Januchowski-Hartley, presented a lecture on: "Reef Fish Behavior, Ecology and Management in Reef Socio-Ecological Systems" After growing up in Africa and the Middle East, Fraser Januchowski-Hartley spent much of his earlier career working for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Papua New Guinea and Fiji, working alongside local communities to conserve their reefs and manage their fisheries. This experience led him to a PhD in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, Australia, focusing on the interactions between traditional management in the South Pacific, marine protected areas, and fish behaviour. Since receiving his PhD in 2014, he has continued to work on coral reef socio-ecological systems, with colleagues in the environmental and social sciences during post-doctoral positions at the University of Exeter, UK and with the Institut de Recherche pour le développement in Montpellier, France. Prior to arriving at Nova Southeastern University in September 2023, Fraser was a Sêr Cymru Fellow and Lecturer at Swansea University in the UK. His current research continutes to focus on reef fish behavior, reef ecosystem function and reef socio-ecological systems, primarily in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, but with an increasing focus on Florida and the Caribbean.
