That someone else is young Elijah. Mason went up to Elijah and asked him for advice on how to make girls like him. Elijah told him that Mason should change the way he looks and acts, (Elijah said that Mason should act more like Elijah). So Mason changed himself to be more like the way he is today and "killed the old him" for Salem. Unfortunately, Mason's dad had to move to Korea for work, and Mason came along. While in Korea and because they were staying there for a long time, Mason's dad decided to have Mason change his name and have a new life in Korea. So that's why Mason = Hyeon and one of the reasons why Salem didn't recognize Mason when he first came to the school. Eventually, Mason, (Hyeon), wants to know what happened to Salem, so he researches her name and finds out she's enrolled in a school where he used to live. Him finding her on the student enrollment list was shown at the end of the past GLMV.
