An AWESOME, LESSER-KNOWN Ridge Hike in Kananaskis

October 18/2022 Fall Hike Today we are in the southern portion of Kananaskis Country, and we will be hiking the Stony Ridge Trail. The route is 13 kilometers out and back with an elevation gain of 736 meters. This is a lesser-known trail based on the info I got from All Trails. The trailhead is located right at the side of the road, and there is no parking lot. I parked at the side of the road in the ditch. After you go past the gate you will enter the Highwood Compound Provincial Recreation area. This area was closed in 2020, what a shame. All that is left is a bunch of picnic tables and fire rings. As I proceeded up the road, I came across an area that had a big outdoor tent, some picnic tables, with an electric fence around it. At .7k I went left and proceeded up the trail. As I was hiking up the trail, I surprised a little deer. I started to get a little bit of elevation gain in this section. Soon the trees thinned out to my right, and I got some views of Holy Cross Mountain. Just past 2k in the trail started to get a little muddy. It looked like a little stream was coming down the trail. I decided to go right here towards a clearing in the trees. I continued up the clearing for a while, and then made my way left back to the trail. The trail started to get a little steeper now. At 3k the trail opened up, and I started to get more views. Here the trail took me in the trees and then out of the trees. I then reached a split in the trail, I took the trail straight and ended up at a viewpoint. From here I could now see the trail ahead of me and Stony Ridge in front of me, and Holy Cross Mountain to my right. The view from here was stunning. I backtracked a bit and took the trail that was on my left when I went straight. I was now hiking back in the trees once again. At 4.1k the trail opened up, and I had awesome views in all directions. Then back into the trees once again. The trail continued up a gully with a mountain called Junction Hill on my left, and Stony Ridge on my right. At 4.9k there was a trail going straight and a trail going right. I took the trail to the right and started climbing up towards Stony Ridge. From here I had a great view looking back. Here the trail got very narrow, steep and rocky. The trail then eased up again and I was heading back into the trees. Here a couple Grouse scared the shit out of me. At 5.3k the trail split again, and I took the trail to the right. I was now finally hiking up Stony Ridge. Here the trail started to get very steep again. Once again, I was back in the trees. At 5.6k I was now getting views to my left looking down and across the valley. As I proceeded up the ridge the trail started going up and down in the trees. Soon I found myself at a rocky outcrop and the views to my right kept getting better and better. I still couldn’t see my final destination. As I proceeded up the ridge, I had sweeping views on my left, and just trees to my right. The trail continued weaving in and out of the trees with some up and some down. As I continued up the left side of the ridge, I could finally see a big open grassy area ahead of me. This was the summit. I continued up the grassy section and eventually some blue flagging on a tree. I proceeded into the trees to the summit. At 6.8k I was at the summit, surrounded by trees in all directions. I then went back out to the grassy area and enjoyed the views looking across the valley and the mountains on the other side. After lunch and a beer, I started heading back. The views walking back along the ridge were even better than walking up the ridge. Once again a grouse flew out of the trees and scared the shit out of me. As I was hiking back the sun was not going behind the mountains and I was now back into the trees. If you are looking to do a ridge hike, I highly recommend this one. It was a lot of fun. This ended up being my last hike without that white stuff on the ground. Now it was time to get myself ready for Winter hiking. This is my 91st video. Thank you very much for watching.
