[4K] NS GP38-2s Galore! Rare 27W Detour Train w/ Leslie RS5T! [March 2020]

My name is Dan, and I am a railfan based mainly on Pan Am Railways’ Districts 2 and 3. On Sunday, March 1st, 2020, a long day of chasing a singular train would yet again present itself. A key train it was, as I can’t see how anyone could’ve seen this coming. During the darkest hours on the night of February 11th, 2020, the historic Hoosac Tunnel suffered a bit of a problem. The age-old marvel had experienced a minor cave-in towards its west portal. Though not the first cave-in in the tunnel’s history, this incident would cause for long-term reroutes/detours on the part of Pan Am Southern. Thankfully nobody was injured by this incident, but efforts to examine and clean up the mess would only result in further minor cave-ins. Nearly a month after the initial collapse, there is still a tunnel-high pile of mountain in the middle of the tunnel. As for the detours, plans were immediately arranged to send the manifest detours over the VTR and NECR in Vermont as well as the intermodal detours over Worcester Main and CSX over the B&A/Mohawk. Although the manifest detours would thrive, circumstances would cause the intermodal detours to stop running over CSX and the lack of suitable detours for the autorack traffic caused those cars to pile up east and west of the tunnel. Some traffic would be sent to the PAS facility in Mechanicville, NY and trucked to further points, but the railroad wanted a way to get some of their other higher priority traffic through. Alas, late February would bring about news that NS and Pan Am had come to agreements to send some of this higher priority traffic from Saratoga Springs, NY to Whitehall, NY on the CP D&H, from Whitehall to Bellows Falls, VT on the VTR (CLP and GMRC), and from Bellows Falls down the NECR to rejoin Pan Am at the old Millers wye in Millers Falls, MA and back. With these plans set, it was time for the first train to run. With VTR having heavy restrictions on 6-axle power (these units must have steerable trucks and be buffered from each other with 4-axle units or cars), NS ended up being relatively limited on what they could send for the detours. From GP60s to sandwiched SD70ACes, speculation continued until the well-anticipated loaded autorack train 27W-29 began its trek east out of Buffalo, NY on NS. Many people on the edge of their seats in anticipation of what was up front, it wouldn’t take long for word to spread that the train was powered by four matching NS GP38-2s with a fifth to be added in Binghamton, NY! The prospects of roaring roots blown EMD 645s ringing through the green mountains in mind, this was not a detour to miss. Upon finding out that the leader of the train also had an awesome Leslie RS5T (NS 5609) , I was out the door. Although an attempt on Saturday, February 29th, 2020 would turn out unsuccessful with the train tying down in Binghamton for the night, I headed out Sunday determined. I would make it all the way out to a location just east of the Richmondville, NY siding on the NS D&H before I would alas meet up with the train. Basking in the beautiful morning light, the quintet of GP38-2s produced that awesome classic look that many thought wouldn’t be seen on the D&H again. Armed with the awesome RS5T, we would start to chase the train as they accelerated out of the siding after meeting westbound intermodal train 205. From there we would have a field day chasing the train over the rest of the NS D&H (including an awesome over-under meet with CSX Q157 in Schenectady), up the CP D&H to Whitehall, and down the VTR to Ludlow, VT before daylight was gone. The sound of those roots blown 645s climbing the GMRC out of Rutland, VT though, that was insane. Nothing like feeling those coming at you in person, with the RS5T to boot! Mission complete, we headed back east having bagged the train nearly two dozen times. On the following day, Monday, March 2nd, 2020, I would find myself going for even more GP38-2 goodness. Upon leaving school with the news that 27W was waiting in Gardner, MA for the P&W to bring up the return empty autorack train, I headed west on the brief ride to see them. After witnessing the P&W headed into the yard to start their train swap with 27W, we would watch the swap happen in nice afternoon light. With the NS power attached to the outbound 28W empty rack detour train, the crew shoved their train through CPF-345 on to the #1 track to allow the P&W back into the yard with their new train. Instructed to pull down to CPF-346 and tie down, we watched one more time as the GP38-2s) accelerated their train down past Jade II for their final daylight movement for the day with the ED-8 crew. Who really would’ve thought that circumstances would fall together so that an RS5T-led 5-pack of GP38-2s would lead a mainline freight in 2020? Truly insane and a pleasure to chase, and I hope this video does the move justice! Enjoy! This is my two hundred and fifty-second video of many more to come, so please feel free to like, comment, and subscribe.
