As darkness was approaching on Sept 19th of 1863 Confederate general Patrick Cleburne was receiving orders to drive back union forces still holding Winfrey field. Simultaneously, Gen George Thomas made the decision to pull back his forces slightly to the west to what he considered a superior defensive position. Come nightfall, his forces would begin pulling back to the area of the Elijah Kelly Farm. 2 of Thomas's divisions under the command of Richard Johnson and Absalom Baird were to hold their positions and cover Thomas' withdrawal. Not expecting anymore fighting neither commander knew confederate forces under the command of Patrick Cleburne were advancing towards their position.
