I figured why not it’s 1 now and it will probably get aha’d. I put the halalu out and started heading back in towards the ledge. It got nervous and so I stopped pedaling and drifted back towards the bait giving it some slack. No takers and I started pedaling again, but 10 seconds later it came back for it. I let it run for 5 seconds then put the reel in gear. At first there was pressure on the line and then none. I reeled like crazy and the fish had just turned back towards me. Realizing that it had been hooked It ran for the bottom and then hard towards deeper water. I thought that it was a big ulua and that the fight would be over soon, most likely from getting reefed. It towed me out to 200ft and then 250ft where it stopped running and I was able to bring it within 120ft of the kayak. I was still guessing to what it was when it took off running just like a shark, but I decided to fight it like it was a serious fish. I now had close to 300ft of line out when it dug in doing slow circles. I was now drifting with the wind and current into shallower water. I only had about half a mile before I would be in 100ft of water. Fearing a sharking I wrenched hard as I inched closer to the ledge. I started to see slow bounces in my rod and I was convinced it was a big shibi. 20 minutes into the fight I had the fish to within 120ft as I crossed 150ft drifting shallower. The fish dug in hard and I nervously tightened my drag a few clicks. I got it to 100 feet away and bought some time. I remembered my friend Billy had said that it is smarter to let big fish drag you around and tire themselves out. I let the fish do circles for a few minutes and then I started putting pressure back on him. It was 80 ft down then 70 and then 50ft. Now in 100 feet of water I could see the water column coming to life with stuff swimming towards the bottom. This renewed my energy and I brought the fish to 20ft. I could see giant sickles and I screamed fuuuuuck yeah. Opportunities like this are pretty rare. With it now beside the kayak I stabbed with my kagi, first glancing off the head. After loosening my drag and a few more circles I struck it straight in the head. The fish was pretty tired at this point and didn’t go crazy. I reached back and got my small gaff and drug the 58lb shibi on board. I cut my line and pulled hard to get my kagi out but it was really stuck. I took out the small gaff and drove my bait knife into the head. If this thing decided to freak out it could easily have knocked me out with the kagi sticking out of it’s head. I got the kagi out and loaded the shibi into my already over loaded fish bag. I put the bag behind the seat and perpendicular to the length of the kayak. With about a foot and a half of bag sticking out either side of the kayak I slowly made my way in with a little over 100lbs of fish.
