(I can't thank you enough.)   / paulhaywood     / paul_haywood_     / paulhaywoodsax   https://www.PaulHaywoodMusic.com Demonstrate the minor pentatonic and/or blues scale adding in the "Funk" note. Hi everyone, paul haywood here. Welcome to the channel, this is where i upload saxophone lessons to help you be the best sax player you can be. In this video i'm going to show you what i like to call the "Funk" note. What it is, how you can find it in every key and when and how to use it in your playing. This is a great little note to know about which will add some extra flavour to your playing and get you sounding more funky! Stick around till the end of the video where i'll do some extra improvising to demonstrate how this addition sounds and i'll leave some bare backing track for you to practice over. Ok so a classic funk sound is the Dominant 7 sharp 9 chord. You'll hear it in a lot of funk tracks, it's the chord that the guitar is playing in this track. So might recognise that sound and it is classic funk ingredient. Now we can't play specific chords like that on sax but we can still imply harmony through the notes we chose to combine. So in a Dominant 7 sharp 9 chord we've effectively got a major and minor third next to each other which gives that nice clashing funky sound. There's a few ways we can imply that harmony, we can use The altered scale or the dominant diminished scale both of which we'll look at in future videos. Or we could use the major blues scale which we've looked at before (link in the description), but that has a very major sound. I want to get that sound funk sound while still using a foundation of the most common scales used in funk improvising, (the minor pentatonic and minor blues scale). So we're going to take those scales and add a major third to them. That way we've got another dissonant semitone cluster added to the scale. You know how cool it sounds when you play the minor pentatonic and add the "blues note" in? Well now we can have another option to add in, The "funk note"! So take a minor pentatonic scale we'll use Bb concert so that's G for alto sax and C for tenor, then add the funk note. We can also take the blues scale , then add the funk note to that. ( OK so think of this funk note as the major third added to a minor pentatonic. You can experiment by adding it to other minor scales and you can get some really cool sounds by doing that but get started with it by adding it to the minor pentatonic, that's also going to give you a way to use it fluently that you can use in loads more settings than those more exotic applications of this note. So we talked in previous videos about it being better to think of the blues scale as a minor pentatonic that you add the blues note to when you choose to add that extra blues sound. So i want you to do that with this "Funk note" too. Use a base of the minor pentatonic and add in the funk note when you want that extra funk sound and add the blues note when you want that extra blues sound. OK so no matter what key you're in, if your minor pentatonic scale is working nicely, try adding in this extra note to get that funky sound. So you'll be adding in the major 3rd of whatever key your playing in. It won't always fit but try it and use your ears to see if it fits the context your playing in. I'm going to finish up by playing a little demo improvisation and i'll leave the backing track playing so you can use that to practice this idea as much as you want.
