Homepage of BasscoverPete https://basscoverpete.com/ This is really a wonderful bassline. Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn at his best! It’s a long song and there’s a lot going on in this bassline. Duck Dunn is known for using a lot of ‘sixt’ notes (such as a F# on a A chord or a G# on a B chord). He also like to play the open A-strong a lot and uses it as passing or (almost) ghost notes. He also liked to play a bit higher on the neck so he could play the notes on the thicker strings. That’s why I’ve often choose to play the G# note (as the sixt note) on the A-string (with a slide), and also the C# note on the D-string in the higher positions. Also the triplets a very nice to play. There are a lot in this song! Duck Dunn varies in his low notes and the high notes. Listen for instance at bar 113 and 116 for some high notes. But also repeating the root note with the fifth is very effective in for instance bar 165. He sometimes uses some ‘odd’ notes such as a C on the E7 chord (bar 171). But it’s very tasteful !! I also like the way he ‘pushes’ to the higher notes (for instance bar 183-185). There’s so much going on in this song. If you like to play a great bluesline, this is the song to do so and let’s learn from the basslines from the master Duck Dunn! I play this song on a Fender Precision 1976 with flatwound strings. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used (except a bit compression). Don’t forget to tune your bass quit a bit higher A4 = 442 Hz.
