While at Kyle of Lochalsh, I took the opportunity to cross to the Isle of Skye. The short ride across to Kyleakin was free of charge for foot passengers, so I made more than one return trip on the MV Portree. It's sister seen operating is MV Lochalsh and two others were also used seasonally to cope with increased traffic. MV Portree, ceased to operate this route a few months later in December 1964 and renamed Portree II having been based at here at Loch Alsh since 1952. It later served a variety of crossings in Greenock then Belfast, Lowestoft and Orford. It's bigger replacement took the MV Portree name but struggled without a side loading turntable. These turntable ferries have almost died out now. Thanks for your comments, I'm glad to hear one of these iconic RORO vessels is still operating.
