It can be very confusing and in this video I want to show you a clear, simple way to improvise over Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli's classic 'Minor Swing' using scales. If we look at 'Minor Swing' we basically have three chords we need to play over: 1. A minor 2. D minor 3. E7 So if we are to improvise over the 'Minor Swing' progression using scales then we need three scales to cover these chords.........or do we? Here's one scale we can play over A minor that sounds cool - A minor harmonic Here's one scale we can play over D minor that sounds cool - D minor harmonic Now this is interesting.....Here's one scale we can play over E7 that sounds cool - A minor harmonic. Yes that's right we can if, we choose play the same A minor harmonic scale over both the A minor chord and the E7 chord. The reason I say "Here's one scale we can..." is that for each chord there are many many choices of scale not just one to choose from... which is when it gets complicated. To keep it simple always remember when you're soloing in Gypsy Jazz you will mostly only encounter Major, Minor or Dominant 7th type chords. So it's handy to have scales that will work over these three chord types. In this video I've made it super simple by selecting the A and D harmonic minor's and showed you how to use the A minor harmonic minor over the E7. REMEMBER: This is all theory and the only thing that counts or matters is the music. Listen to those scales and sing them. Hear how they sound over the chords. Then to make your solos actually sound like improvised solos instead of simply going up and down the scale, try to be creative...leave gaps, skip notes etc. Then the scales will be working for you and giving you the confidence that you're harmonically correct. Have a go yourself over the 'Minor Swing' chord changes and try to make the two scales (A minor harmonic and D minor harmonic) sound cool. Get comfortable with them. Of course this is only one way to look at improvising but it will help you get the basics right. Have fun!
