📖🧑‍🎓 The village of Lyons-la-Forêt is said to have been built around a fortified castle built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and completed by his youngest son, King Henry I known as Beauclerc. Its strategic position near the immense forest estate on the border of the Kingdoms of England and France fueled the conflicts between the Dukes of Normandy and the Kings of France. Sometimes a military headquarters, sometimes a holiday and hunting spot for Saint-Louis or even Philippe Le Bel, Lyons-la-Forêt lost its castle in a fire but regained peace and prestige in the 16th century with the establishment of a bailiwick. Most of the buildings date from this period: the town hall, former seat of the bailiwick, which has retained its court room with period furniture and an 18th century fleur-de-lis hanging, or the magnificent hall in the heart of the village. From the 17th century, artists succeeded the lords and made Lyons a social destination: Isaac de Benserade, poet at the court of Louis XIV settled there, as did Maurice Ravel later.
