Alexander Selkirk - The Real Cast Away

The movie Cast Away (2000), as well as being a great story, has an important message for anyone faced with adversity – of not giving into despair, whatever life throws at you, and of taking each day as it comes and waiting for things to get better. The movie is a work of fiction but the story bears a close resemblance to a real life historical castaway - Alexander Selkirk - a 28-year-old Scotsman who spent four years on an uninhabited island in the Pacific in the eighteenth century before being rescued. This historical documentary traces Selkirk’s colourful life and describes how he coped with his ordeal, and how his tale was used by later writers to create their own survival stories, including Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.
