Save a Prayer Bass Cover

"Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran off of their album, Rio, which came out in 1982 and featured the Great John Taylor on bass. I went on a bit of a Duran Duran binge after getting these Aria Pro II basses. John Taylor was well known for playing Arias and he was the impetus for me getting them. This wasn't a song I'd considered covering until I saw a fellow playing it in an Aria group I belong to on Facebook. I thought it was much more interesting than I'd remembered it, so I gave it a whirl and I'm glad that I did. John Taylor took the unusual approach of deconstructing the bassline as the song progressed. Usually, musicians will build upon their parts, putting in more notes, beats, and flourishes in order to build up the intensity as the song progresses. This was a signature Neil Peart move. John Taylor, however, actually plays less and less on each passing verse, simplifying the part and removing all the passing tones until it's stripped down to it's core. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another song where the bass does this. Maybe you can? I still had my microphone/mixing board set up, so I did a little ad-lib on this topic after the song ends. A few weeks back (after I recorded this video), John Taylor started doing these tutorials of some of his better known basslines. If you haven't seen them, you really should check them out. Aside from being a really great bass player, he seems like such a cool fellow. Here's their channel -    / 07duranduran   I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. As someone I know said, "The last thing we need at this time is a three day weekend." The bass is a 1981 SB-700 and I'm playing through a SansAmp Bass Driver Version 2.
