Few traces remain of the Longobard (568-774) and Frankish (774-888) dominations, while the following period is marked by the first news (998) of the existence of the parish church of S. In the following decades the history of Bassano intertwined with the political and military events of the Ezzelini: their power derived from landed wealth, increased by the investiture of the "tithes" by the bishop of Vicenza and by the proceeds of the "mude", i.e. at the gates of the village. The supremacy of the Ezzelini, if on the one hand it limited municipal autonomy, on the other it favored, through the experience of the administration of Ezzelini's assets, the formation of the first municipal magistracies. When, in 1259, Ezzelino III died, the Bassanesi asked for the protection of Padua and were assigned the goods and rights that had belonged to the Ezzelini, regulating communal life with the Statutes. After the brief domination of Vicenza (1260-1268), Bassano went through a tormented period, which saw it subjected to Padua, Verona and Padua again and which ended in 1388 with its passage under the Visconti.
