Today, youths from across Mukuru slums—encompassing Kwa Reuben, Kwa Jenga, and Viwandani—celebrated their graduation from an extensive training program on Black Soldier Flies, hosted by Miramar International College in collaboration with the Global Center on Adaptation. This program, aimed at promoting sustainable urban farming and waste management, has had a profound impact in the slums. Black Soldier Flies are instrumental in converting organic waste into high-quality compost and protein-rich feed for livestock and fish, offering a solution to waste accumulation while providing a source of income and nutrition. The event was a proud moment for community organizations like Reuben Strong CBO, UBUNTU, and ARIZEN CBO, the latter being in attendance to offer emotional support to their peers as they graduated. The training helped foster a sense of community responsibility, improved economic prospects for participants, and encouraged environmental stewardship, which is especially important in low-income, high-density areas like Mukuru. The gender balance in the program played a key role, ensuring that both men and women from the slums were equally empowered through this initiative. The Nairobi Rivers Commission Chair, Pamela Ouko, was present, symbolizing the growing recognition of the need for sustainable waste solutions in line with efforts to rehabilitate the city's waterways. Representatives from the Nairobi County Government also attended the ceremony, underscoring the importance of grassroots initiatives in addressing urban challenges. The venue for this momentous occasion was the Africa Pentecostal Church in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, with the event running from 8 am to 2 pm.
