20th Motorized Infantry Division Part 2 - Smolensk Pocket - Fieseler Storch Fi 156 - Campaign Atlas

SUPPORT THE CHANNEL www.Patreon.com/Military1945 This is unreleased footage from late July of 1941. It shows the immediate aftermath of a Soviet ambush on a Sd Kfz 222 reconnoissance vehicle from the 20th motorized ID and…it’s exquisite. We’ll see more from this incident and two other attacks on vehicles and then view the amplified German reprisal response. Finally at the of this video you’ll find an aircraft identification clip from a training film for the Fieseler Storch and I’ll talk about it’s specifications. If you’re interested in seeing this kind of unreleased footage there’s no better channel on YouTube. Here we see General der Panzertruppen Rolf Schmidt presenting the divisional commander of the 20. mot. ID, General Hans Zorn, with the the Knights Cross on July 27th of 1941 at the divisions headquarters in Bialystok in eastern Poland. Zorn introduces the divisional staff to general Schmidt, his direct superior. Saluting to the left is Major Joachim Ziegler. To his right with the glasses is Oberfeldarzt Dr Wilhelm Mauss. Hans Zorn was the divisional commander of the 20. from 10 Nov. 1940 until Jan. 12, 1942. He would eventually be killed in action on August 2, 1943 and would be posthumously awarded the Oak Leaves to his cross on September 3rd, 1943. This battlefield situation map is from July 27th 1941 and gives an overview of the Eastern Front. After taking Minsk and crossing the Dnjeper River the advanced elements of Army Group Center rushed on towards Smolensk with the hope of continuing all the way up to Moscow and ending the war. The 20. Mot ID had swung around the north of the city and then on July 24th turned south to cut the the Smolensk - Moscow highway. This was done in in cooperation with the 7th PzD and 18th mot. ID and completed on July 25th which in effect created a new pocket of about 10 Soviet divisions. Here we see July 26th and then 27th as more german units enter join to surround the entrapped Soviets. On the 27th in a concerted effort the Soviets would succeed in momentarily breaking only but the encirclement would be quickly reestablished and the pocket eliminated. 300,000 Soviets would later be taken prisoner. This footage is honestly special. It shows the aftermath of a Soviet ambush on a reconnaissance unit of the 20th. ID. Obviously these soldiers are the first on the scene. We then see three soldiers killed in action and a soldier who has arrived on the scene motioning to an immobilized armored car. The one German who survived the ambush is badly injured and receives first aid. This type of footage you will obviously never seen in any newsreel. Look how the foot soldiers pass by, business as usual. After the ambush it is believed that those who perpetrated the attack are still nearby and the area combed through carefully. Unsuccessful, additional security troops are called in and the area being searched is expanded. That the overwhelmed Soviets were not giving in to German military superiority seemed insolent to the invaders and thus infuriating. Leaders were encouraged to act decisively which often resulted in short-term results but also led to a continuous flow of volunteers that would join the partisan ranks and would eventually cause considerable chaos and damage in the rear areas. These panzer 1s from the 7th PzD took part in the pincher movement which cut the Smolensk - Moscow highway. Here we see Signal Corps Funkers hanging communication cables to a field headquarters. Another attack takes place on a convoy and this truck is destroyed. The Locals houses are thoroughly searched for weapons and explosives. In spite of continued partisan activity in the area the advance continues and troops stream through the locality. This Sd Kfz 232 heavy armored car hit a mine and its front left wheel has been blown off. One of the crew is inspecting the damage done to the vehicle and another is prodding the ground looking for further mines. Mines, like snipers are a force multiplier capable of holding up large formations and effecting troop moral. The driver of the armored car has been injured by the explosion and is receiving first aid to his left leg on another vehicle. In retribution for the attacks a nearby forest is set on fire.
