Of course not. But Audi's wheeled one into Aussie showrooms anyway. Audi has form when it comes to slipping humongous engines under the bonnet of its flagship Q7 SUV. In 2009 it was a twin-turbo-diesel V12 monster related to the one powering the triple Le Mans winning R10 race car. And the German brand's appetite for a statement model at the top of its SUV range is obviously not satisfied. In fact, it's claiming this is the world's fastest seven-seat SUV, even quicker than its V12 predecessor. That may sound like a very niche claim… but there's more to the story. Audi says people are going to buy this family-friendly beast because of its design, versatility, and the strength of this. However, the V-shaped elephant in the engine bay is here... a stonking 4.0-litre diesel V8 with two turbos and an electric compressor that acts like a supercharger to spool up the turbos when they're off-boost. The first gen Q7 was big... more like the QE7, requiring a small flotilla of A1s to escort it safely into harbour. And while this new gen version is closer to a conventional wagon's shape it's still a sizeable chunk of finely crafted sheetmetal. The SQ7's interior is as flexible as it is luxurious, with premium leather everywhere, as well as sleek brushed metal finishes, and soft-touch materials used around the cabin. The standard equipment list is suitably lengthy for a car weighing in at around 150 thousand, including LED headlights, adjustable air suspension, virtual instrument display, a BOSE 3D sound system, four-zone climate control, an arsenal of active and passive safety tech, plus much, much more... But beware the Audi options list. Eight boxes ticked on our test car adds up to just under 33 grand, which starts to push the price close to the 200 barrier. The SQ7's substantial size pays off when it comes to interior space. Access to the third row is easy thanks to a simple fold and roll design for the two outer second row seats, but once you're in place it's tight for leg and headroom for adults. With all seats upright there's room for some decent size luggage, but when it comes the the CarsGuide pram it means lowering the third row seats. That's done with a flick of the button, and one's they're lowered, in terms of space for the pram, it's a slam dunk. The third row seats fold flat into the cargo floor at the touch of a button, opening up hectares of space. Fold the second row and you're ready for indoor cricket. Traversing the urban jungle in the SQ7 there's no obvious clue that the jump to light-speed is only a press of your right foot away. The car is smooth and progressive in everything it does - step off acceleration, braking, steering - it's all effortless and you feel directly connected behind the wheel. One surprise is the throbbing engine note doesn't sound like a diesel, and that's because a sound actuator in the exhaust system is tricking your ears. You can even vary the amount of sound it generates depending on what drive mode you're in. It sounds sporty, but it's kinda disappointing when you realise it's fake. Considering its size and performance potential the official fuel consumption claim is impressive. On test we recorded 11.6 litres per 100 km on the dash, which is still pretty handy for a 2.3-tonne mothership, and our higher figure offers a clue to what's coming next... The SQ7 accelerates like a supercar and has the dynamics of a sports sedan half its size and weight. A massive stream of torque is delivered in a linear flow strong enough to bend the space-time continuum. Our car's tech and chassis options combine with the standard air suspension system to deliver a beautiful blend of ride compliance and handling response. Steering feel is great, body control - and this is a big body - is well buttoned down, the fat ContiSport rubber grips hard, and manual changes from the eight speed auto are satisfyingly sharp. Adding an S to the Q7 badge transforms this car into a 2.3 tonne autobahn battleship, ready to dominate the fast lane through sheer force of will. This car is as much about image as it is about speed, and knowing that sledgehammer performance is at your disposal is amazing. CarsGuide - Buy cars. Sell cars. Simple.
