Sea Scouts BSA – History, Structure, and Advancement

The Sea Scouts are one of the oldest branches of the Boy Scouts of America. Established in 1912 it has evolved into the vibrant youth program that it is today. It was renamed Sea Explorers at one point then was moved to the Venturing program. Today Sea Scouts is its own program with the BSA. Scout leaders are curious and youth ask questions about this program constantly. This video looks at the Ship structure and helps translate to Troop equivalence. Sea Scouting is only two years younger than the American Scout Movement. Sea Scouting is far more naval/militant in its structure than Scouts BSA or Venturing. 1912 Sea Scouts Ships was first founded. 1949 Sea Scouts became Sea Explorers. 1998 Sea Explorers switched back to Sea Scouts under the Venturing program. 2016 Sea Scouts became a full-fledged standalone program. Sea Scouts is for all youth over the age of 14 or has completed the 8th grade. Participation at Sea Scouts can continue until the 21st birthday. The order of the arrow is also available and encouraged. Sea Scouts Structure – is very similar to Scouts BSA Troop positions. The Ship is chartered by a supporting organization. The COR and Unit Commissioner is designated for the ship. This structure is similar to all BSA units. Within Sea Scouts, there are an adult committee, adult leadership, and youth leadership positions. • Chartered Organization Representative, Unit Commissioner, and the Committee may choose to use the word Ship in their title. • The Skipper (Scoutmaster) and Skipper's Mates (Assistant Scoutmasters) have very similar roles to a Scouts BSA Troop. Skipper's mates are divided into two departments, Administrative and Program. • Boatswain (Senior Patrol Leader) and Boatswain’s Mates (Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders) are split into two departments, Administrative and Program. Boatswain’s report to their respective skippers. • Yeoman (Scribe) in charge of ship communications and reports. • Purser (Treasurer) in charge of tracking expenses, reporting, and working with the committee treasurer. • Storekeeper (Quartermaster) in charge of equipment and provisions. • Crew Leader (Patrol Leader) and Assistant Crew Leader (Assistant Patrol Leader) manage tasks with the crew and delegate responsibilities. • Specialists (Patrol Guides) have multiple duties that are assigned to them throughout the ship. • Ships Chaplin and chaplains aid have the same responsibilities as in a Scouts BSA Troop. • Den Chief is also a position between Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts. 📊 Poll (7/20/22): Have you ever wondered what Sea Scouts was about?
