Thyroid nodule ablation is a procedure used to treat thyroid nodules, which are abnormal growths or lumps in the thyroid gland. There are various techniques for ablation, but one common method is using radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or ethanol ablation. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): In RFA, heat generated by radiofrequency waves is used to destroy the thyroid nodule. A thin needle is inserted into the nodule, guided by ultrasound imaging, and then radiofrequency energy is delivered to heat and destroy the abnormal tissue. Ethanol Ablation: Ethanol ablation involves injecting ethanol (alcohol) directly into the thyroid nodule. The ethanol causes the cells to shrink and die, leading to the reduction in size or complete disappearance of the nodule. Both procedures are minimally invasive and usually performed on an outpatient basis. They are considered effective alternatives to surgery for treating benign thyroid nodules, particularly when the nodules are causing symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, breathing, or cosmetic concerns.
