Dr. David Naylor - “Origins of Evidence-based medicine”

Part 3 of a 4 part series featuring excerpts from Dr. David Naylor’s lecture “Emergence of Health Research as a Data Science” for the 2018 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Dr. David Naylor is a Professor of Medicine and President Emeritus of the University of Toronto (2005-2013), and the past Dean of Medicine at the University of Toronto (1999-2005). He was awarded the 2018 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Dr. Naylor is a physician-scientist, academic leader, and creative force in health sciences research. As one of Canada’s most preeminent health scientists, he has made major scholarly and health policy contributions with a profound influence on health service delivery, public health, and health research funding. In this clip, Dr. David Naylor examines evidence based medicine and the beginnings of randomized trails. Dr. Naylor argues that the ideal of evidence based medicine will always be limited in impact, so long as the evidence is constrained by our collective ignorance of underlying causes and mechanisms of human disease. It wasn’t until after World War 2 that randomized clinical trials were conducted in a manner that has become familiar to modern trials. In 1971, Dr. Archie Cochrane, a prominent public health specialist, called for widespread use of rigorous randomized trials to test treatments, and for systematic reviews of these trials. His influence laid the foundation for what became known as evidence based medicine. Filmed at the University of Ottawa on November 6, 2018.
