My First Actual Bikepacking Trip: Victoria to Cowichan River via the Trans Canada Trail

Hey everyone, this week's video is from what some might consider my first "bikepacking" trip, as in a trip that is substantially different than bike touring where you, for the most part, take the same route that a car might. It's a distinction that I don't find too important to gatekeep, but it does often have some real, practical distinctions. Let's start with an overview of the route: I left Vancouver the night before and camped in a similar spot to where I stayed the night before the previous Vancouver Island Bikepacking Collective event (oh, that's who organized this event by the way). It was a rainier, cooler sleep (don't skip dinner!) but I met up with our group and we started on our way. We went through Victoria in what would be around an 80km ride to Stoltz Pools via the Sooke Trail, Malahat Connector and Cowichan Valley Trails. Some portions of those are also part of the Trans Canada Trail, too. So not only would it be the longest rides I've ever done, it would also be about 80% on gravel, with a total of 1,100 meters of elevation gain PLUS all on a fairly loaded bike. (I left the drone at home, you can thank DJI's broken Android app for that). I stuck to the end of the group (sometimes by choice but more often due to the challenging ride) but overall had a pretty awesome time. Here is the full route details: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39272341 My Strava Activity:   / strava   The next day we headed over to the town near Cowichan Lake (I think that is the name of the town, too) and got some food (not many vegan options at the cool retro diner, but even the more pricey pub by the lake had small portioned-vegan option which wasn't anything special, though it was still appreciated. My return route was along the Cowichan Valley trail to the east. I stopped in Duncan for a surprisingly tasty savoury vegan crepe and continued to Crofton where I caught a ferry to Vesuvius on Salt Spring. After ducking past a grumpy and off procedure BC Ferry First Officer, I booked it and hustled to Long Harbor to catch what I believed to be the last ferry to Tsawwassen. Google Maps said 40 minutes which would have put me 15 minutes past the ferry home's departure time. of 2:25. I knew it would be a slim chance but I sent it and actually arrived at the ferry as cars were still buying their tickets. To that I would like to thank the grumpy first officer, the vegan crepe, Miley Cyrus for her beautiful and inspiring track "The Climb" which I had on repeat for the last few minutes, and also thankful that the ferry seemed to be running a bit behind. Oh, and on the way back we saw whales! Orca whales! Comment a whale emoji below if you watched to the end and got to see this cetacean treat! 🐳🐋 As always, thanks for watching and I'll see you all on our next adventure.
