Bhutto became minister under general Ayub khan and later became foreign affairs minister. Later Bhutto deserted Ayub after the 1965 debacle and fought election with his own Pakistan People’s Party. Bhutto later became prime minister and chose Zia-Ul-Haq as his Army chief. However, Bhutto's rule was also marked by controversy and conflict. He faced opposition from within his own party, and his government was accused of corruption and abuse of power. In 1977, Bhutto was overthrown in a military coup and later convicted of conspiracy to murder. He was executed in 1979. His daughter Benazir Bhutto also became Prime Minister after Zia’s regime ended.
