Man in India Builds Taj Mahal Replica for His Wife

An Indian man has built a replica of the historic Taj Mahal for his wife in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Constructed with white marble procured from Makrana, a city in Rajasthan state and the same place that gave the Taj Mahal its marble, the smaller imitation embodies several aspects of the real monument, including the large dome, intricate minarets and even artwork seen on the original. But one key difference is that this replica is not a mausoleum - it is a residence. "I jokingly told my wife, if you pass away, then I will build a Taj Mahal," said Anand Prakash Chouksey, who lives in Burhanpur and owns and runs a hospital and boarding school. "She obviously refused and said she doesn't want to die. Then I said not a problem, I will make a Taj Mahal you can live in." The famed 17th Century Taj Mahal, often called the monument of love, was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the northern Indian city of Agra in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz. She died in Burhanpur, home to the newly built replica, while giving birth to their fourteenth child. According to Chouksey, her body was buried in the city temporarily and later exhumed and taken to Agra. Emperor Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built between 1632 and 1654 after Mumtaz died. He also planned on being buried next to her, and the complex houses their graves and a mosque, as well as several other graves of lesser Mogul royalty. The stunning monument, acclaimed for its delicate and unique lattice work, is India's biggest tourist draw, pulling in millions of visitors every year. The tourism business it drums up keeps hundreds of thousands employed, and Agra's economy moving. The replica, which is about one-third the size of the Taj Mahal, took three years to build and artisans from Agra were hired to recreate the artwork on the marble.
