Antiseptic soaps hand wash | dry skin | dry hands | Dermatologist

There is a fad nowadays of using hand sanitizers and antiseptic soaps on a regular basis. Unless you work in a hospital setting, where you are exposed to infections on a daily basis, the use of these soaps and sanitisers are absolutely unnecessary. Antiseptic soaps are widely marketed and promoted as products which will eliminate “99.9%” of germs etc. there is no requirement to kill the “germs”. The normal flora, bacteria present on our skin is actually beneficial in protecting the skin from other infections. So, frequent hand washing can actually irritate the skin and be counter-productive. Water also acts as an irritant. People who use these antiseptic soaps and hand washes, often complain of not only dryness but also itching and scaling, which might be more pronounced on the webs and sides of fingers. This is commonly seen in women you engage in kitchen work. They have the habit of repeatedly washing their hands before initiating and finishing their work. This act of multiple washing of hands, strips the skin off the oil which is important in maintaining the skin barrier. So make sure you use a soap, only when necessary. And use a mild one with glycerine in it, and do apply liberal amount of moisturiser on your hands after you finish work. Washing your hands with regular moisturizing, glycerine based soap and water is good enough to keep them clean. Please do not use antiseptic soaps for bathing, especially if you have normal to dry skin. It will only add to the dryness. Antiseptic hand washes and sanitizers contain alcohol which end up drying and irritating the skin. If you absolutely must use a sanitiser, in cases when you are caring for a new born baby, make sure you apply liberal amount of moisturiser that that. This will prevent dryness, irritation and flaking of skin. Even antiseptic wipes cause dryness. Try to avoid them. After washing your hands, use a soft towel or tissue to dab the excess oil off. A lot of people have the habit of rubbing their skin harshly after washing. This is cause more drying of skin. It is best to use a mild soap and use a thick hand cream immediately after to prevent drying of hands. Please use a regular moisturizing soap on a daily basis. if you suffer from dry hands then please watch this video :    • How to prevent dry hands | do's and d...   Videos: Treatment for dark spots on face after acne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV3H4...
