During the First World War the Russians were defeated by the Germans during the Battle of Tannenberg (1914). This happened on the Eastern Front of WW1. When war broke out the Russian Invasion of East Prussia started by Russian generals Alexander Samsonov and Paul von Rennenkampf. Retired general Paul von Hindenburg teamed up with Max Hoffmann and Hermann von François to defeat the Russian Imperial Army at Tannenberg. Later the achieved victory at the Battle of the Masurian Lakes. Later the Tannenberg Memorial would be erected which wouldn't survive the Second World War.
