Howdy ya’ll. Today we will look at the oldest photographs of the funiculars of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These all existed in the 19th century, and many of the photographs today come from shortly after these funiculars began operation. Miraculously, Pittsburgh was known to have at least 14 funiculars throughout the 19th century, with some sources claiming upwards of 17 of these unique engineering accomplishments gracing the city. Indeed, the funicular is a design we can find in the Old World, yet after the 1889 Johnstown flood, also in Pennsylvania, we begin to see major American cities reevaluating their flood plans, and installing funiculars. We will dive into this history, briefly, while examining the oldest and most detailed photographs of the funiculars of Pittsburgh. Enjoy!
