WALKS IN DORSET at CORSCOMBE (AND THE DEVIL'S ARMCHAIR) (4K)

In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4 mile circular walk (with a detour) from the village of Corscombe which is located 4 miles North East of Beaminster & 6 miles South of Crewkerne. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan. I parked my car at The Fox Inn and headed West past Corscombe Court into meadows before diverting back for a wander through the village. Following a very old track – Barrow Lane (part of the Harrow Way which in turn is one of the oldest “roads” in Britain ….. in existence since the Stone Age!) - I headed South to Beckham's Coppice. My route then took me past the ancient stones known as the “Devil's Armchair” - thought to be the remains of a Neolithic Long Barrow. I continued uphill to the top of a ridge which gave me great views to the North. After a small detour West to visit the High Ground Meadow Natural Burial Mound, I headed East along a section of the Hardy Way which took me through Coombe Bottom. My second detour took me South past Urless Farm and it's pretty lake. I was then unable to find or identify either of my possible intended footpaths back North, either side of the lake. Despite there being a Waymarker for one of the paths, it was clearly impenetrable & so I had to retrace my steps back to Coombe Bottom. Even then, there was no clear path along the Hardy Way (it seemed to just stop in thick vegetation), but I managed to make my way North to join up with the track that took me past the Church of St Mary (which I then visited). My final destination was The Fox Inn back in the village. Map courtesy of Google Maps. Aerial pictures courtesy of Google Maps. Music from the Youtube Audio library.
