Convocation: The US Supreme Court's 2022 Dobbs Decision and the History of the Pro-life Movement

October 28, 10:00 am in Butler Hall, University of Mary: The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs Decision and the History of the Pro-life Movement Historian Joseph T. Stuart, Ph.D., considers how the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision has changed the playing field for the pro-life movement in light of the history of American moral reform. • Dobbs returned the authority to regulate abortion to the people and their elected representatives • Historically, the women’s movement and the abortion movement were not the same things—they had independent origins • The pro-life movement did not emerge from the Republican party; there were possibly more pro-life Democrats in the 1960s, and the pro-life movement actually emerged among rights-conscious liberals • Early black pro-life leaders like Mildred Jefferson immediately likened Roe v. Wade (1973) to the infamous Dred Scott (1857) decision because both cases denied rights to a whole population of people • Even opponents recognize that the pro-life movement has become one of the most influential political movements of modern American history • There is a need for a “Pro-life Reconstruction” movement today to ensure the rights and the care that all women and babies need
