Mastering Antique Negotiations

The question is often asked, "is it appropriate to negotiate a price in an antique store?". Well, unlike your typical retail store where the price on the tag is the price of the item, prices in antique stores usually are somewhat negotiable. A good rule of thumb, though, is not to be presumptuous. Your first, and best approach, is to ask the antique store owner whether they would accept a price offer on the antique. In most cases the antique store owner will say yes. Secondly, unless you have expert knowledge on the antique item you are seeking to purchase, you should expect the antique to be priced at a fair value. That said, there is a chance you may be able to purchase the antique at a discount of 10% to 20%. The best approach in any negotiation is to do your research. And that research should focus on what similar antiques sold for (not what those antiques are priced at). This is particularly important with those products whose value has a more nuanced, or subjective measure, such as artwork.
