Mario Bellini bridges the past to the future of Living at home

Mario Bellini is a bridge between disciplines. The world-renowned architect and designer has received the Golden Compass Award a total of eight times. His other prestigious prizes include the Gold Medal (Medaglia d’Oro) awarded by the President of the Italian Republic for his contribution to the global promotion of design and architecture (2004) and the Ambrogino d’Oro from the City of Milan for civil merit (2011). He has given countless speeches around the world, and from 1985 to 1991, he edited Domus magazine, one of the most internationally recognised publications in the field of design. 25 of his works are in the permanent design collection of the New York MoMA, which dedicated a personal retrospective to him in 1987. His diverse projects include the Portello Trade Fair quarter in Milan, the Villa Erba Exhibition Centre in Cernobbio (Como), the Tokyo Design Centre in Japan, the headquarters of Natuzzi Americas in the USA, Messe Essen exhibition centre in Germany, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the headquarters of Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, and the new Milan Congress Centre. His current projects include the “New Eco-City” in Zhenjiang in China (2013–2018) and a large residential, cultural and sports complex in Qatar (2014–2022). From a background so rich in experience, on Democratic Design Day 2017 in Lausanne, he will be setting out the prospects and potential solutions to the ever more complex conflicts of interest between commercially used spaces, a growing world population and the various resulting typologies of space that influence where we live.
