Better than new DIY conversion of a Super 8 projector

Movie night! With some Super 8 movies I scored at the flea market. I discovered my trusty Bell & Howell Autoload projector’s lightbulb was burned out. In my experience with old projectors, if you are lucky enough to find the replacement lightbulb, there is no guarantee it will work, most of the time is cheaper to buy another projector. Oddly enough, Walmart sells a replacement lightbulb for CAD$165, probably 8 times the amount you would pay for a projector like this at a flea market (link below). I decided to convert it to LED. Not only works, but also produces way less heat. I could run it without the fan if I wanted to. Sorry about the focus in some of the shots, I was wearing a headband mount and this video was shot in the spur of the moment, this is YouTube anyway, no budget for focus puller, right?. In a world where we are constantly bombarded by advertising and marketing, it can be easy to fall into the trap of believing that the newest and shiniest filmmaking tools and techniques are the key to success. However, the concepts of rescue, repair, and repurpose offer a valuable alternative perspective for filmmakers who want to create meaningful and impactful work without being swayed by the latest trends. Rescue involves saving something from being lost or forgotten. In the context of filmmaking tools and techniques, this can mean rediscovering and preserving older technologies that have been overshadowed by newer, more advanced ones. By rescuing and preserving these tools and techniques, filmmakers can tap into a rich history of filmmaking that stretches back to the early days of the medium. For example, the use of practical effects in filmmaking has been largely replaced by computer-generated imagery (CGI) in recent years. However, by rescuing and preserving the techniques used in practical effects, filmmakers can create a sense of authenticity and physicality that is often missing from CGI-heavy films. In doing so, they can create work that stands out from the crowd and offers a unique and memorable viewing experience. Repair involves fixing something that is broken or damaged. In the context of filmmaking tools and techniques, this can mean repairing and maintaining older equipment rather than constantly replacing it with new models. By doing so, filmmakers can develop a deeper understanding of the tools they are working with, which can lead to a more nuanced and effective use of those tools in their work. For example, older film cameras and lenses have a distinct look and feel that is difficult to replicate with modern digital cameras. By repairing and maintaining these older cameras and lenses, filmmakers can create work that has a distinct and unique aesthetic that sets it apart from other films. In addition, repairing older equipment can be more environmentally friendly than constantly buying new gear, which can contribute to a more sustainable filmmaking practice. Repurpose involves taking something and giving it a new purpose or meaning. In the context of filmmaking tools and techniques, this can mean repurposing older equipment or techniques for new and innovative uses. By doing so, filmmakers can create work that is fresh and unexpected, while also drawing on the rich history of filmmaking that has come before. The concepts of rescue, repair, and repurpose offer a valuable alternative perspective for filmmakers. By rescuing and preserving older technologies, repairing and maintaining equipment, and repurposing older tools and techniques, filmmakers can create work that feels authentic, unique, and enduring. By doing so, they can create a body of work that stands the test of time, rather than being quickly forgotten in the endless cycle of new products and technologies.
