A walk to one of West Cornwall's most enigmatic sacred sites in beautiful 4K. What and where Madron Well are is actually somewhat confusing as there are not one but two wells. There is the Holy Well and there is the Wishing Well. Most people only know the latter as the Holy Well is even harder to find and on a less well-trodden path. That said, getting to the Wishing Well is not mean feat. Tucked away in the undergrowth the path tends to get somewhat boggy this time of year. Still, it's a fascinating place dating back to pre-Christian, pagan times. There are a number of rituals and ceremonies attached to the wells. The most obvious is the tying of clouties to the trees. These are strips of material and represent a "wish" - this would traditionally have been related to illness and a cure. Madron chapel dates back to the 12th century and is a small rectangular building with no roof. It has a small altar and baptistry which I'm sure still sees some use. It's a really atmospheric place, set in a clearing in the woods with just the birds for company. Beyond the chapel are the weird and wonderful "Pixie woods". Basically just two rows of evenly spaced poplar trees creating a corridor through the fields. I have no idea of the whos, hows and whys of this place but it has a very strange feel to it....
