======================================================== What is a gerund? A gerund in English is an "ING" form of a verb (progressive that works as a noun in a sentence. Though it looks like a verb, it does not work as a verb. Since it doesn't work as an action verb, it is called a non-finite verb and called a verbal. Functions of a gerund phrase It works as the following in a sentence: 1. Subject of the sentence 2. Object of the sentence 3. Object of the preposition 4. Subject complement 5. Object of a possessive pronoun Examples As subjects 1. Smoking is not good for health. Gerund - smoking 2. Cooking is my favourite hobby. Gerund - cooking As objects 3. Kids love playing all the time. Object - playing Verb - love 4. My brother hates waking up early in the morning. Object - waking up Verb - hates As objects of the preposition 5. He is interested in fighting. Object of the preposition - fighting Preposition - in 6. This is not the right time to talk about worshipping. Object of the preposition - worshipping Preposition - about As subject complement 7. All I love is teaching. Subject - all I love Gerund working as the subject complement - teaching 8. My sister's passion is blogging. Subject - my sister's passion Gerund working as the subject complement - blogging As the object of the possessive pronoun 9. Her writing is so bad that you can't even read what she writes. Object of the possessive pronoun - writing Possessive pronoun - her 10. I don't like your acting.
