Castle Garden Bazaar

The Neo-renaissance Castle Garden Bazaar, was built in 1883 during the last extension of the Royal Palace, to close the palace gardens with a ceremonial gate on the Danube riverfront. It was designed by Miklos Ybl, the most renown architect of the age. Initially even shops were placed into the arcades, to attract the crowd to the new Buda promenade from the popular Pest Corso. This is why it was named Castle Garden bazaar. The locals however, rather remained on the Pest side, and the shops soon went bankrupt. Later the abandoned shops were occupied by art studios. The gardens and the building were badly damaged during the siege of Budapest in the WWII. Between 1961 and 1984, a legendary music club, the Buda Youth Park operated within its walls. At that time Hungary was a communist dictatorship that reflected also in the strict rules and severe dress code of the club. Boys were obliged to wear long pants, jacket and light colour shirt with tie. Jeans were prohibited. Girls in mini skirts were not allowed to enter. Dancing was only allowed for couples, group dancing, twisting to music other than twist were prohibited. During a concert in 1984, a stone fence collapsed due to the huge crowd, and a few people were injured. Following this accident the club had been closed and the building had been abandoned for 30 years. As a result of its great reconstruction completed in 2014, the building and the gardens had been restored to their original pomp, and its infrastructure had been modernised. It was fitted also with an escalator - connecting the garden with the Royal Palace - which can be used free of charge without having to climb the stairs. The building today is a cultural center, hosting various events and exhibitions. It is decorated with beautiful artwork, statues, mosaics, and ceramics made by the famous Zsolnay porcelain factory. You can visit the garden free of charge, and enjoy the amazing view over the Danube riverfront with the Chain bridge and the Parliament building, and Gellert hill with the Citadel and the Liberty statue. It is adorned also with a beautiful Triton fountain, and you can grab a meal or a coffee in the garden cafe too. Castle Garden Bazaar - along with Bu-da Castle and the Danube riverbanks - has been a UNESCO World Heritage sight since 1987.
