UNDER REFURBISHMENT | Omeleto

An animatronic cowboy goes off-script. UNDER REFURBISHMENT is used with permission from Griffin Douglass. Learn more at https://imdb.com/name/nm10131871. Sarsparilla Sam is a beloved animatronic cowboy who has been part of the show at a Western-themed restaurant for years. Closer to an android than a typical motorized puppet, he's been performing the same show repeatedly, slowly evolving over the years. One day, he improvises a new line, much to the delight of himself and his audience. But this also draws the disapproval of the restaurant owner, who wants things to stay the same. Sam tries to follow orders, but he can't shake the desire to explore his creativity and gain more autonomy over his performance. This puts him on a collision course with forces bigger than himself, as he soon faces a choice of freedom or survival as he knows it. Directed and written by Griffin Douglass, this short sci-fi drama starts as charmingly light and entertaining as the children's show that makes up Sarsparilla Sam's oeuvre, with a sturdy desire to entertain and amuse and a brightness in its look and feel that makes its primary colors pop. And in meeting Sam, we discover he's much like the show he's the star of: cheerful, positive and good-natured. But when Sam has a "sui generis" moment of creative freedom, it alters his trajectory. It resets his sense of what's possible in his existence, and following through on that realization takes the film into more complicated, even darker emotional territory. The writing lets the AI-like status of its animatronic androids exist as a preexisting fact in its world, focusing its energies instead on deepening characters and relationships. Sam has an off-stage friendship with Buford, another animatronic android performer who plays his foe onstage. However, his relationship with his owner gets more contentious as Sam presses for more freedom, forcing the owner to exert control. Actor Vinny Balbo plays Sam's can-do attitude with sincerity, as well as an underlying naivete that's endearing and even innocent. His touching assumption is that his growing awareness of freedom and independence is a good thing, and at first, he doesn't quite understand why his adversaries are against it. From his perspective, it would make for a better, more interesting show. He hangs onto this naivete, which only falls away when the owner ramps up his efforts of control and intimidation. By then, Sam truly realizes how trapped he is in this world -- and must face a choice between returning to the way things were or fighting for the full expression of his latest evolution. By the time Sam realizes the full extent of his dilemma, UNDER REFURBISHMENT has grown darker and more complex, though it never leaves behind Sam's fundamental goodness and decency. Instead, it resituates that can-do attitude as a rebellion against a larger system of oppression. Not only does Sam discover an urge within him to create, dream and make, but he also becomes aware of his own place in the bigger machinery. It's the central arc of the film, exploring both the joys and perils of being human in a way that's gently charming and then deeply sad.
