Rare White Bison Return to Métis Crossing in Alberta, Canada

Métis Crossing is now home to a herd of rare white bison. The revered animal, known as “bufloo” in Michif, which is the language of the Métis people, have not roamed the area since 1865. White bison have long been honoured by First Nations and Métis peoples, and they return to these traditional lands alongside woods bison, plains bison, elk, white elk and Percheron horses. Their return marks the establishment of the new Visions, Hopes, and Dreams Métis Crossing Wildlife Park. Métis Crossing is situated along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in Smoky Lake County, and it’s the first major Métis cultural destination in Canada. The interpretive centre shares Métis stories – many of which the bison are central to – traditional culture and provides an opportunity to connect to the land in new ways.
