Why Aren’t Oceansize (And Their Drummer) More Famous?

Play better fills and grooves through greater limb independence - FREE download: https://drumswithpete.com/limb-depend... Mark Heron - the drummer from Oceansize - is one of the most creative and unique drummers alive right now. So, why does no-one talk about him? In this video, I show you three big features of Mark's drumming that you can use in your own playing. I analyse these features in two key Oceansize tunes, 'Music For A Nurse' and 'Only Twin'. I like to do videos on a drummer's style, and what you can learn from them. But this video's different... All the while, there's a background question you can't help but ask by the video's end: why isn't Mark Heron more celebrated? Because he's SO GOOD!!! This is a 'fan loveletter', not a complete picture of Mark Heron, or an 'official' representation of Oceansize, or their views, etc. My aim is to educate drummers about elements of Mark Heron's drumming. PLUS I attempt to answer my teenage confusion at Mark's apparent 'disappearance' from music. __________________________________________________________________________ Chapters: 0:00 - Where Is Mark Heron? 0:26 - Who Were Oceansize? 1:45 - Musical Trends In The 90s-00s 2:33 - Oceansize's Label 2:52 - What Happened To Oceansize? — 3:22 - Mark Heron's Creativity 3:38 - Mark Heron's Symmetrical Drumkit 4:01 - 3 Key Mark Heron Traits — 4:24 - Music For A Nurse 5:17 - Poly-metric Madness 7:07 - Dynamic Range 7:52 - Unusual Spacing — 8:57 - Only Twin 10:10 - Three-Against-Two 11:24 - Five-Over-Three 11:52 - All Together Now 12:24 - Insane Limb Independence 12:50 - Three And Five Become Two 13:22 - Timing Demonstration 13:50 - Drumming Softly To Loudly 14:42 - Gaps In The Beat 15:37 - Apply To Your Drumming — 16:03 - Why Isn't Mark Celebrated? 16:30 - Possible Hardships 17:30 - Celebrating Mark Heron 19:03 - Listen To Oceansize Songs: Music For A Nurse Only Twin Artist: Oceansize Drummer: Mark Heron Skill Level: Advanced __________________________________________________________________________ Where can you listen to more Oceansize? Check out their four mammoth albums here: Effloresce:    • Album - Effloresce   Everyone Into Position:    • Album - Everyone Into Position   These have become so obscure, they're actually fan uploads on YouTube! The Bandcamp store is the 'official' home for these works of majesty. Frames: YouTube Music:    • Oceansize - Frames (Full Album)   Bandcamp Official: https://oceansize.bandcamp.com/album/... PLUS, this fun 'live in the studio' performance from the 'bonus disc' of the album - also a fan upload! Aaaah remember when music came attached to 'discs'? I read about it in an ancient history book one time:    • Oceansize Frames DVD   __________________________________________________________________________ Oceansize themselves are dormant, but their members still make all kinds of strange niche music. Mike Vennart (vocals/guitar) is the most active member, but the others are making music. Most recently a Mike Vennart (vocals/guitar) collaboration with Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro. And the legendary Dave Lombardo (Slayer) guesting on drums. There are also traces of limited release Oceansize merch, vinyls, etc making their way into the world. Still nothing resembling a 'full set' though... Best place for those updates seems to be here: https://www.facebook.com/oceansizeuk/... As for Mark Heron (Oceansize's exceptional drummer), you can listen to his new project 'Binge', here: Bandcamp: https://binge.bandcamp.com/ Official Facebook:   / bingemcr   Plus, here's his official report on where he's been since the death of Oceansize:   / 2129484667078589   And if you want more Oceansize 'drum stuff' from me, here's a drum cover of their song 'Trail Of Fire' from the album 'Frames':    • Math-Rock Fun-time: Drum Cover | Ocea...   __________________________________________________________________________ The fastest and 'fun-est' way to get craaaazy good on the drums, is to cover real songs. Every song is a 'study' in something. Learning 'Trail Of Fire' will help you with: switching between odd time signatures developing drum patterns through-out a song extreme dynamic ranges navigating non-conventional song-structures If you want more detailed breakdowns and commentaries on what's going on with the drums in this tune, I've another tutorial after that video for you. I hope it helps you get maximum fun from playing the drums! Happy drumming, Pete
