Today we’re taking the brand-new Focke Wulf FW 190 A-8 by FlyingIron up for its first aerobatic display over Heringsdorf. It’s the airplane I most anticipated since the release of FlyingIrons Bf-109, as all four previous releases by them are among my absolute favorite airplanes in the sim and the Focke Wulf is, like Spitfire and Messerschmitt, one of my favorite airplanes in real life. Like with previous FlyingIron releases the Fw 190 is another step up from their already fantastic previous releases. The visual model is by far their most accurate and detailed one today. The textures have also been drastically improved, especially when you compare them to the Spitfire or P-38. Like the real Focke Wulf, the sim version is much easier to fly than the Bf-109 and maybe even the Spitfire, at least during takeoff. With its wide landing gear, it wants to go straight and it’s easy to keep it under control during takeoff and landing. This might sound a bit strange, but the one thing that takes some getting used to, especially during aerobics, is how slow the engine sounds. Funnily enough that is something I noticed with real Fw-190s too. I was lucky enough to see two Flugwerk Fw190 reproductions fly on different occasions quite a few years ago, both powered by a Russian 14-cylinder ASH-82 engines with 1900 hp, that is somewhat similar to the BMW 801, and it felt like you could count every cylinder firing making the aircraft appear way slower than they actually was. I was surprised when Paul Allens’ real BMW powered Fw-190 flew a few years later, that it sounded very similar. My guess is that it mostly has to do with the arrangement of the exhaust system. Speaking of the sounds, like we’ve come to expect from FlyingIron, they are mostly fantastic, especially on startup the Focke sounds glorious. However, it’s also the only thing I’ve found so far that could a tiny bit of tweaking in my opinion. I feel like the engine is slightly to quite compared to various cockpit sounds or the “stress” sounds of the airframe. You might notice some squeaking noise during most of the flight, because my throttle lever is constantly moving a bit. I can’t imagine you would be able to hear that over the engine noise. I think with a bit of fine tuning the soundset could be one of the best in the sim. Overall, the Fw 190 is fantastic and I’m sure it’ll become one of my most used airplanes. In my opinion FlyingIrons airplanes are a must have for every warbird fan out there, they are truly in a league of their own! For this flight I choose a nice freeware scenery by tgolab of EDAH Heringsdorf Airport on the German island of Usedom. It’s of course home to the famous Hangar 10 collection (or now also called Luftraum Nord) which includes multiple Messerschmitt Bf-109s and probably the nicest Flugwerk Fw 190 currently flying.
