The role of inflammation in Parkinson's disease

Marina Romero-Ramos, PhD, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark, discusses how inflammation is thought to contribute to Parkinson's disease and details the evidence that supports the role of neuroinflammation in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease. Inflammation is a factor that is thought to drive neurodegeneration, but it is still unclear if it is present at the onset of the disease. However, once the neuronal damage has been initiated, the involvement of the immune system is already evident, and as it progresses, it eventually contributes to neuronal death. Various lines of evidence have supported the role of neuroinflammation in Parkinson's disease, including epidemiology and genetic findings. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
